What is a comprehensive financial plan?

A financial plan is both a comprehensive review of all of your financial and tax documents as well as a written plan summarizing the review of those documents to help you achieve your financial goals.

Who prepares a financial plan?

A Certified Financial Planner (CFP) with extensive training will prepare your financial plan.

What is the process to prepare a financial plan?

A CFP will first collect various financial and tax documents from you to conduct a thorough review. Some of these documents will include: tax returns, retirement account statements (i.e. 401k, IRAs, etc.), bank/credit card statements, paystubs, loan/mortgage statements, insurance policies (i.e. home, auto, life, disability, umbrella, etc.), trusts/estate documents, and other pertinent records. The CFP will also ask you to complete a questionnaire to allow you to share your goals with us. Examples of such goals include: retire at 60 and spend $100,000/year; buy a house; pay for college; leave a legacy; etc.

The CFP will examine all of your documents and your completed questionnaire to complete your financial plan.

What goes into a financial plan?

A comprehensive financial plan will focus on several key topics that specifically apply to your situation. Some of the topics include:

  • Detailed retirement cash flow analysis with scenarios
  • Risk management
  • Taxes
  • Investments
  • Estate planning
  • College education planning
  • Real estate analysis
  • Cash flow analysis
  • Debt reduction or management

How long does it take to complete a financial plan?

Depending on the complexity of your situation, a comprehensive financial plan takes approximately 4-6 weeks to complete because of the volume of information collected, analyzed, and presented in a report.

What happens when the financial plan is completed?

We will schedule a meeting to go over the financial plan with you in detail, but we will send you a copy of the completed plan prior to our meeting. During the presentation meeting, we will go over each section of the financial plan and answer any questions you have. If we are only preparing a financial plan for you, the engagement is completed upon the presentation of the financial plan. You are responsible for executing the plan. If you are working with ACap on an ongoing basis, then we will execute the financial plan for you during your first year.
